Review of Safety Razor Blades

In my previous post (https://www.samuelpua.com/index.php/2017/09/03/the-art-of-wet-shaving/) I’ve written on what I’m up to for wet shaving.

This post aims to record and consolidate the reviews I have of some blades I’m trying out. It might be separate post, but I’ll try to consolidate the reviews as much as I can.

The blades above are the blades that I’ll try out in an attempt to find out which one I’ll like best and is most suitable for my shaving experience.

7am – Hi Platinum

  • Razor: Mühle R41
  • Date: Oct 2017
  • Review: This is pretty good. Though I left it to one of the last, this was better than expected. Sharp and smooth
  • Score: 8/10

Astra – Stainless Steel

  • Razor: Mühle R41
  • Date: Oct 2017
  • Review: Similar to the Astra Platinum in smoothness. Sharpness wise not as sharp as I wasn’t able to get bbs level shave in 3 shaves
  • Score: 8/10

Astra – Superior Platinum

  • Razor: Viking Chieftain
  • Date: Aug 2017
  • Review: I liked this one. Comfort is there while having sufficient sharpness to be effective
  • Score: 9/10

Crystal Super (Israel Personna) – Stainless Steel

  • Razor: Viking Chieftain
  • Date: Aug 2017
  • Review: Pretty rough and caused a couple of nicks. It could also be because I just started using Chieftain. Something I can go back to to try out again
  • Score: 6/10

Derby Extra – Super Stainless

  • Razor: Viking Chieftain
  • Date: Aug 2017
  • Review: I quite like this one. Not too aggressive on the face while being generally effective.
  • Score: 8/10

Feather – Hi Stainless

  • Razor: Viking Chieftain
  • Date: Aug 2017
  • Review: It’s pretty good. Can feel its sharpness and effectiveness. Really effective, but it makes a slight tradeoff with comfort on this one.
  • Score: 7/10

Gillette 7 O’Clock – Sharp Edge

  • Razor: Mühle R41
  • Date: Oct 2017
  • Review: I must say this is a surprise. the SharpEdge gave a much smoother shave compared to the Green 7 O’Clock. The first shave was a bit tuggy, but from the second shave onwards, it gave a smooth and effective shave, much alike Derby and Astra
  • Score: 7/10

Gillette 7 O’Clock – Super Stainless

  • Razor: Viking Chieftain
  • Date: Aug 2017
  • Review: Might be me and Gillette. This feels pretty rough and caused several nicks
  • Score: 3/10

Gillette – Platinum

  • Razor: Viking Chieftain
  • Date: Aug 2017
  • Review: Might be me and Gillette. This feels a little rough, especially after the skin became slightly more sensitive after taking the first pass on this blade
  • Score: 5/10

Gillette – Silver Blue

  • Razor: Mühle R41
  • Date: Oct 2017
  • Review: This was slightly better than the other Gillette (except SharpEdge). Decent blade for me
  • Score: 6.5/10

Shark – Stainless Steel

  • Razor: Mühle R41
  • Date: Nov 2017
  • Review: It was alright
  • Score: 6.5/10

Shark – Super Chrome Blades

  • Razor: Viking Chieftain
  • Date: Sep 2017
  • Review: Not too bad. Can feel it’s a really sharp blade. Feels aggressive on the skin, but so far no nicks caused.
  • Score: 6/10

Sharp – Hi Chromium

  • Razor: Mühle R41
  • Date: Sep 2017
  • Review: Not as comfortable, as it was a little rough with the Muhle. Needs a little getting used to in terms of pressure. Overall still not a bad blade per se
  • Score: 7/10

Voskhod Bocxon – Teflon Coated

  • Razor:Mühle R41
  • Date: Sep 2017
  • Review: Overall quite smooth and decently sharp. Slightly a little tat less smooth than Derby and Astra but still within comfort zone
  • Score: 8/10

I’m definitely trying other blades after these. I do think I’ll have a general idea of what I like for my blade after this to get my every-day use blade though and hopefully will have much lesser nicks and cuts after the adventurous blade trying venture is stabilized.
